Why Markdown Has Become the Language of the Web
Created in 2004 by John Gruber and Aaron Swartz, Markdown was engineered to allow writers to format plain text documents using an intuitive syntax that remains easy to read as raw text and easily converted into structurally valid XHTML or HTML.
Today, Markdown is the universal standard powering GitHub documentation, Reddit comments, Discord chats, static site generators like Jekyll and Astro, and modern headless CMS platforms.
